Atieh is a PhD student at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Currently, she spends an enormous amount of time doing research, something which she absolutely loves. In case you're curious, her current research interest is Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). It has taken her a long time to find the research field she is passionate about, changing paths along the way many times, but now she feels confident that she is on the right track.
As part of her research, she seeks to improve computer accessibility by exploring the challenges that people with motor impairments deal with everyday, identifying their strengths and limitations, and exploring new ways to enhance their quality of life and to broaden their inclusion. Having herself be a part of this group certainly motivates her to put more effort into her work. At the age of one, she was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) type 2, a form of motor neuron disease that left her limited in movement over time and in need of wheelchair. The fact that she has found her connection to the world through computers has made her aware of the value that computers can have for people with disabilities like her.
In her spare time, she enjoys watching TV series, playing video games, and spending time with her friends, whether online or in person. Further, she loves going to the pool (even though it is as part of her physical therapy schedule).
